Centre for Wetlands People and Biodiversity, International Office (IO), Universitas Tanjungpura
Pontianak, September 17 – 19, 2012
Background
and use change in West Kalimantan Province occurs at a rapid rate. Between 2000 and 2011, the average rates of deforestation in dryland and wetland forests are 1.07%, and 2.42%, respectively. This loss could be higher in the future as the present development in this region is mainly based on many kinds of exploitation on forest resources in both drylands and wetlands. These include forest conversion and harvesting, mining, and rapid expansion of oil palm and timber plantations. Fishing in natural fresh waters is also more intensive. Consequently, the view of peoples in West Kalimantan on human relation with nature is abruptly changed. The present development scheme is predominantly driven by economic growth only. Lacks of environmental and cultural measures of sustainability hasten marginalization of the disadvantaged community groups at a cost of environmental decline in this region. Now, it is urgent to find alternatives and “green” strategy that will lead to sustainability of wetland resources in West Kalimantan Province.
Aim
The general objective of this workshop is to assess sustainability of wetland uses in West Kalimantan. The specific objectives are to recommend best options and a “green” strategy that can help policy makers to define sustainability measures of wetlands.
Topic
1. Current status of land use change in West Kalimantan Province
2. Scientific knowledge on wetlands that may either induce major environmental impacts on Green House Gas (GHG) Emission or enhance sustainability of wetlands and other natural resources.
3. West Kalimantan Regional Action Plan of GHG Emission Reduction on Forestry and Peatlands; and
4. Social and cultural measures that ensure sustainability of wetland and other natural resources
